The Haul

from Dean and Deluca!

Let’s see, there’s coffee for the house. And dark chocky. Wonder where that goes??

Chinese Culture and Cakes

The Autumn Moon Festival has come and gone. It’s a big deal because it’s a reason to get friends and family together and eat EAT EAT!
You also get to eat mooncakes as part of the tradition. But I would not advise to eat a whole one. Lots o’ sugar and lard in that.
If you’re in Asia, you naturally get the best selection of moon cakes and alternative moon cakes. Even companies such as Mrs. Field’s and Coffee Bean issue moon cakes that are unique to their products.
Here’s a review of Coffee Bean’s mooncakes from Kenny Sia in Malaysia.

But do OUR Coffee Bean shops carry these? NooooOOOOOOOOOoooooooo!

Morning Wisdom

Don’t drink grapefruit juice immediately after brushing your teeth.
If you haven’t, don’t. And if you have done so before, you know EXACTLY what I mean!

Ramen Primer

Sooo, some people here ask me, “what’s the big deal about top ramen”? That question usually comes after they view pictures in the blog or gallery and see steaming bowls of ramen with the perfect soft boiled egg and tender cha siu…
Mmmm. Getting hungry and it’s 00:40 right now!
Anyhoo, after I beat them senseless with their own top ramen packages, I try to explain (briefly) the different styles and broths and it’s not instant noodles (which call themselves “ramen”, sacrilege!), but a category of noodle along with soba and udon. Then they run away right after I swoon over how smooth kyushu ramen is over shoyu.
Here’s a page that explains the whole ramen thing in Japan. (from QuirkyJapan).
Now if I could only find a good ramen shop in San Francisco! We have three for the entire city, all clustered within a block of each other and not that terrific…

No more Yum Cha…

at Harbor Village. They’re closing. Something about rent going up and not being able to get a new lease.
There seems to be a lot of that going around.
Harbor Village was in Embarcadero Four for close to 20 years and was one of the few downtown yum cha places that was worth the money cuz of the food and the view.
And even though many tong-yahn dismissed Harbor Village as being too “gwai” because of the location, every time I’ve been there, it was 90% Chinese inside. More so than other places here link Ton Kiang or Yank Sing(which is horribly expensive).
Guess I gotta find another yum cha house. Or at least until Harbor Village’s chef opens up a new place.

Continuing the ice cream theme

So I went with my flatmates to dinner and then to Ghiradelli (say Gear-a -delli) Square for dessert. Well, actually we went to the Ghiradelli Chocolate shop. The flagship shop!

This is called a S’more sundae. It has caramel sauce, hot fudge, marshmallow creme and oh yah, a caramel chocolate square and a maraschino cherry. And there was vanilla ice cream too.
It was soooo loaded that it began to melt just from everyone looking at it.
But I was the one that ate it. Geez, I’m sooooo bad!

Mmmm Coffee!

This makes sense for some reason…

You Are Coffee Ice Cream
Energetic and lively, you are always on the go.
You’re doing a million things at once and doing them well.
You tend to motivate others and raise spirits.
You are most compatible with chocolate ice cream.

Now this is just Wrong wrong wrong!

I went to PacBell SBC Park for a Giants game. We won, yay!

PacBell SBC Park is known for having expensive food, which it does. It also has expensive beer. All kinds of beer. Bud is US$5.00 and everything else (“premimum”) beer is US$7.50. They even had this:

PBR! Nice…for some

But check out the price!

IMG 0686
Since when has PBR been considered a “premium” beer? Oh yeah, when the hipsters started quaffing it.

Now that’s just plain WRONG! And the US$4.25 is for the bag o’nuts you see there in the pic.

US$7.50 for Pabst Blue Ribbon? Anta BAKA??

Irish Chinese Food???

I’ve heard of multinational companies, but this is absurd! Check out my bag of potstickers.

IMG 0660
In their defense, they were pretty good

Pretty straightforward, right? Now check out the name of the company that makes these taste treats…

IMG 0662
That would be the SoCal O’Tasty clan, don’t ya know!

Yup. A company from Southern California (City of Industry) with an Irish sounding name that makes Chinese food.

First BBQ of the Season

So baseball has spring training, football has pre-season and I’ve got the “it’s not raining anymore so let’s haul out the Weber” season.
Ergo, it’s the first BBQ of the season! We all decided to BBQ some chicken parts (Ivan), angus steak (me) and, erm, a Pork Log (Andy).

As the “master of fire”, I fired up the coals and started up the grill. Dun worry, I was supervised every step of the way.
