{"id":834,"date":"2010-10-24T18:04:54","date_gmt":"2010-10-24T18:04:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/walking-ixus.net\/blog\/?p=834"},"modified":"2010-10-24T18:04:54","modified_gmt":"2010-10-24T18:04:54","slug":"din_tai_fung_xintandi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/walking-ixus.net\/blog\/din_tai_fung_xintandi\/","title":{"rendered":"Din Tai Fung Xintandi!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"zemanta-img mt-image-right\" style=\"margin: 1em; display: block; float: right; width: 310px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Din_Tai_Fung_lunch_by_Richard_Moross_in_Singapore.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/9b\/Din_Tai_Fung_lunch_by_Richard_Moross_in_Singapore.jpg\/300px-Din_Tai_Fung_lunch_by_Richard_Moross_in_Singapore.jpg\" alt=\"Din Tai Fung lunch by Richard Moross in Singapore\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"zemanta-img-attribution\" style=\"font-size: 0.8em;\">Image via <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Din_Tai_Fung_lunch_by_Richard_Moross_in_Singapore.jpg\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a class=\"zem_slink\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Din_Tai_Fung\" title=\"Din Tai Fung\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Din Tai Fung<\/a> is a Taiwanese restaurant chain that&#8217;s known for its xiaolongbao (<a class=\"zem_slink\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xiaolongbao\" title=\"Xiaolongbao\" rel=\"wikipedia\">soup dumplings<\/a>).&nbsp; They&#8217;re maybe a step or two away from being perfect, depending on which location you visit.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>The great thing is that they&#8217;re all over Asia so if you&#8217;re in Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, <br \/>Malaysia, Indonesia, mainland China, Australia or even Taiwan, you&#8217;re not far from xiaolongbao goodness.&nbsp; If you live in the USA however, you&#8217;re very far from xiaolongbao goodness as there&#8217;s only one location outside of Los Angeles and that location has mixed reviews.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Within Asia, all the locations are at an equally high standard.&nbsp; Some locations are more equal than others.&nbsp; For example, the <a class=\"zem_slink\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=22.2939805556,114.171219444&amp;spn=0.01,0.01&amp;q=22.2939805556,114.171219444%20%28Tsim%20Sha%20Tsui%29&amp;t=h\" title=\"Tsim Sha Tsui\" rel=\"geolocation\">Tsimshatsui<\/a> location is considered one of the flagships because of its <a class=\"zem_slink\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michelin_Guide\" title=\"Michelin Guide\" rel=\"wikipedia\">Michelin Star<\/a> and its larger, more varied menu.&nbsp; Because of its location and its accolades, it&#8217;s also one of the more expensive locations.&nbsp; Compared to this, the Xintandi location seemed like a bargain even though it was in an expensive part of Shanghai and in spite of the inequality of the exchange rate (which will hopefully change in about a year).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The appeal of Din Tai Fung is not necessarily the special-ness of the menu (aside from the xiaolongbao, whose equal I cannot find in my half of the world) but that the menu is prepared to the highest standard and that the service in the restaurant is also top tier.&nbsp; That&#8217;s not saying much, if you were to mention the Tokyo or Singapore locations; service SHOULD be good.&nbsp; But to get that caliber of service on the mainland or even in Hong Kong is a special thing.&nbsp; When you visit a Din Tai Fung (in Asia), you will get xiaolongbao hand folded 23 times and it will be delivered to your table scalding hot.&nbsp; Remember to scoop it out with your soup spoon and nibble the side like a beaver so that the soup pours out of the dumpling into your spoon.
