(updated)

So I met up with the lovely Sara-Ann tonight for dinner. We met up in her ‘hood for Peranakan cuisine, something that would be ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE to find in the states, lah! And something that many SIN visitors dun usually get to experience because it’s out on the East Coast, waaay away from the CBD.
I took the MRT out there and Sara was gracious enough to meet me at a central spot (a petrol station!) and then off we went to eat. She picked out one of her fave places and in we went. (pic of menu coming shortly).
Now since I’m totally clueless, Sara translated the menu. Ordered some excellent dishes. And dug in!

This was an appetizer called Achar (pickled greens) and some chili paste. I think I passed muster with the greens, but the chili paste knocked me for a loop. Still good though!

This is sambal terong (sambal eggplant). Besides the eggplant, there’s Bakawan Kepiting, a meat and crab ball soup in chicken broth with cilantro, Satay Babi, a satay curry pork dish and Ayam Buah Keluak, chicken with buah keluak. The unusual thing with this last dish is that the sauce is dark, almost black and they cook the meat inside lychee shells. When you eat it, you have to dig it out. I’ll leave it to you to figure out which one is which.
Sara-Ann likes what she ordered! I like too!

Then it was time for dessert. Got a hot and a cold one. Burp.
Peranakian food to me is spicy but with hints of sweetness. It definitely is ingredient sensitive, meaning fresh is good. It’s filling and robust, prob because of the Chinese influences but the ingredient choices make it “not chinese food”.
We went on a stroll afterwards and wound up at a kopi (coffee & snacks) place for a nightcap. Wound up drinking more than eating because still full! Had to call the evening early because I had to be off to Changi the next AM, early! Total bummer that. Of course, that leaves more to do next time I’m in SIN, so I guess that’s not a TOTAL bummer. Nope, wait, that is.

Happy Diners, lah!

So I met up with the lovely Sara-Ann tonight for dinner.
