Yes, I get that Panda Express<\/a> is not genuine \u201cChinese food\u201d.\u00a0 Even though the roots of this chain<\/a> would count as genuine \u201cChinese food\u201d.\u00a0 And it tastes pretty good.\u00a0 \u00a0It fills a niche, along with Starbucks (coffee) and McDonald\u2019s (hamburgers and breakfast) for making Chinese-American food available all over the US, cooked to a standard and satisfying the craving for chow mein with soy sauce and Orange Chicken (which is a very guilty pleasure).\u00a0 Let\u2019s face it, getting different kinds of Chinese food is easier in the big cities than it is, say in Omaha or Des Moines.\u00a0 But those cities have Panda Expresses there so it satisfies the craving, at least temporarily.<\/p>\n

And for each meal at Panda Express (usually at malls and airports), I have a renewed appreciation for Chinese food done properly.\u00a0 Beef chow fun and wontonmein at Hing Lung (San Bruno), Xiaolongbao at almost any Din Tai Fung.\u00a0 Yum Cha at Dragon Beaux.\u00a0 Mabo tofu and Kung Pao Chicken at a good Hunan place.\u00a0 Despite the food snobs saying otherwise, Panda Express does serve a purpose in the greater cause of Chinese food.\u00a0 And for the food snobs, you can always order the Wagyu truffle Hor Fun at Lokkee<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The term \u201cChinese food\u201d itself is misleading.\u00a0 It can refer to Cantonese, Shanghainese, Hunan, Szechwan, dim sum, wontonmein, cha chaan teng and lots more styles I\u2019ve probably missed.\u00a0 It\u2019s all good stuff.\u00a0 I think we should put Panda Express in that same category.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
